where's Waldo? Lake edition

Much to our dismay, Waldo was overhead this week. :( The fire has been burning for a month now in tough terrain, and after a west wind pushed it to Deschutes county the recent east winds have pushed it back to the campsites we know and love.

Waldo Lake was a destination for many years for our family. Despite bugs and random acts of awful weather, a good day at Waldo sticks in the memory for a very long time. Photos of my parents and other family members that now look down from above are in every family album.

Over a dozen years ago a large fire wasted the north shore of the lake. It didn't reach the campgrounds, but the desolation was a sad sight from the NE-shore campgrounds. This year the west side is in flames, and now abuts the area of the previous burn. The smoke has generally drifted east, but yesterday it came up the valley and dimmed our views. Thankfully it was too high up for the scent to reach us.

Sep. 9/10 update. Both camps on the NE shoreline are pretty much beyond hope. After a few days of moving eastward over the Cascade crest, east winds are pushing the fire against the lake again. That wind direction is expected to continue into Sunday, and the two camps are in exactly the wrong spot.

Very sad for our family-favorite campground.

 

9-16 update. 

Weather much more moist/cool and less wind. Not wet, but definitely feeling more autumnal. North end of Charlton Lake singed, and more Waldo shoreline to the south involved.
